Back online
This librarian is not happy, Jan.
I spent most of Saturday night working on my sites, this one included. On Sunday afternoon I sat down to update this blog only to find that there was a database connection error. Hmm, strange. So I logged in to my web host control panel only to find that all of my sites were displaying dates from Sept 2007. Of course there is no phone support available and I can’t get through to the online chat support service so I lodge a ticket.
So I ring tech support first think on Monday. Eventually I get through to a tech who says that they’ve run a restoration script over my account. I explain that it’s not acceptable and they restore my site. But now all of the MySQL connections are not working (ie Wordpress ie this blog) and so I am promised that they will look into it and get back to me.
Fast forward to Wednesday and all of my sites go down without a trace. My web host is also down. Hmmm, doesn’t look good.
So I turn to the Whirlpool Forums and find out that I’m not alone. I read more about my web host and decide that it would have been a good idea to google them before I had signed up.
I take this as a sign that it’s time to move on and arrange new hosting (having done some online research, rung sales support and taken out a free trial acct the previous week). But of course I can’t get in to my new account.
Luckily this new mob have an online support chat service that actually responds. It turns out that I have to file a ticket as they need to look into it but the problem is resolved overnight.
So here we are in our new home. It will take me some time to get the site looking pretty again and I’m attempting to retrieve old posts through Google cache (we’re not on wayback, alas).
But now it’s time to sleep, perchance to dream (and not about servers and webhosts!!)
